Absenteeism is the planned or unplanned absence of an employee from work at frequent intervals. In other words, it doesn't include occasional planned leave where an employee utilizes their leave allocations or unplanned emergency leave. It only includes the leaves taken more or less as a habitual action and without showing a valid reason for it. When an employee takes leave without authorization, it can fall under absenteeism too. When the authorized absence progresses to more than three consecutive days, it can be considered as absconding.

Like many other countries, absenteeism poses a serious workforce management concern for organizations in India. Excessive absenteeism can seriously affect organizational productivity.
